The Ghostly Gateway was set up as an experiment in 2004 as a research tool for our team of ghost hunters called Ghost 2 Ghosts to use for when we needed to research various aspects of the paranormal.
Soon after the launch of the search engine, it became pretty clear that we had a great tool on our hands that the general public & other paranormal investigators could benefit from. As a result, we released the search engine to the general public, which has proved to be very successful.
On average, the Ghostly Gateway receives around 35,000 hits a month and is growing steadily each month of which we are very proud.
The GhostlyGatewayBot is our very own spider indexer and whenever a site is submitted to our database we run a few checks to start with, mainly just to see if the link is correct and also to check that there is a return link to our search engine. Once one of our editors checks your submission, we will then spider your website. In other words we send out the GhostlyGatewayBot to look at your website and send back information about it, just the same as Google does, except we only allow paranormal related sites into our search engine. You can check when our spider last visited your site by looking in your server log files, you should see something like this : Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Ghost; +http://www.ghostlygateway.co.uk)
When submitting your website to our search engine, you will be asked to supply a link that points back to us. We ask this of you because the Ghostly Gateway is a non profit site. We make no money whatsoever, not even from the occasional adverse that you may see near the top of the pages. So as a result, we have no budget to advertise our services, but a link from your website back to ours gives us a little boost in other search engines such as Yahoo! and Google, which helps spread the word for us.
If you would like us to stop indexing your website then you can do 2 things. The first is to disallow the GhostlyGatewayBot in your robots.txt file, or you can simply
